I watched a real stinker of a film last night “Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning” that featured some egregious use of a single SOSUS array station to pinpoint a submarine implosion with “accuracy down to the meter.” Aside from being personally offended, it got me wondering what other movies out there feature quasi-realistic treatment of underwater acoustics.
Those that spring to mind:
Hunt for the Red October
Le chant du loup
Please add if you can.
If memory serves, Das Boot has decent sonar/passive acoustics scenes.
For poor treatments, the first one that comes to mind is in Finding Dory. The beluga echolocation being able to visualize through water pipes → into an air-filled room → back into a different water-filled pipe is pushing the envelope. Though admittedly it’s a Pixar movie.
Another whale one: in Star Trek IV, the probe in space is sending acoustic messages to the ocean which shouldn’t propagate. (or need to be frequency modified, I would suspect)
I have a feeling this could become the largest thread on this forum
I also feel the need to say “Give me a ping Vasily, one ping only” given the mention of The Hunt For Red October.
The Abyss has decent application of acoustics when they try to identify the alien craft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S842--9AMqo
